I was excited to download and start this book, especially after watching a movie about Marie Antoinette, but this is the second time I'm shelving it without finishing. The information is fantastic, but the writing is a slog, which is probably indicative of the time period in which it was written. My favorite parts were Antoinette's letters to her family and her attitudes toward charity, which gave me a great insight into who she really was and not who she was painted during the French Revolution. I wish the author had had the graceful, flowing writing style as his subject! Overall, it's information is wonderful, especially if you want to know who Antoinette was behind the image she was given, but the writing left me desiring a lot.Product details

I enjoyed this book. It is an older biography, but there is still lots of good information in it. If you'd like to learn more about Marie Antoinette, this is a nice place to start.
If you have the patience to put up with the archaic language, if you want to know about Marie Antoinette with accuracy and no frills, read this book. Maybe Yonge's opinion was slanted in favor of this Queen (and in disfavor of La Fayette), but the reader has an opportunity to make up his/her mind based on the references quoted. Note this book does not read like a novel; it is very historical and discusses many aspects of the court of Louis XVI which probably won't be of interest to most people, but are crucial for a more accurate and complete understanding of what happened, and why. However, it is impossible not to feel the drama and terror in the later part of the book, as it must be when you are reading about a woman who was destined for such greatness, and such bottomless tragedy.
liked the movie with Kristen Dunst especially since it moved much faster than a book ;) but the movie as usual is not entirely historically factual so I wanted to read about the subject to get a more clear idea of the time and events
Very interesting, but tough to get through. It is very full of information and insight, but it is hard to stay focused because there is just so much minute details. Very scholarly and thorough. Must have the mental capacity to stick with it and go through to the end.
I love to read more on Marie Antoinette. But I could not get into this particular book on Marie Antoinette. Very dry read. I give this book 2 stars.
The historical events decribed are very much as I recall them from my inexplicable journey to 18th century France.
Many people are not aware that Marie Antoinette was greatly enamoured of me, despite my repeated rebuffs. Indeed, my friendship with her husband the king would never have permitted me to perform such an act, nor would the fear of my wife somehow finding out about it through the 200 year space/time gap that separated us.
